From Kibera to the World: DanceLab Academy is Changing Lives Through Dance

In the heart of Kibera, one of Africa’s largest urban slums, hope can be hard to come by. Overcrowded, under-resourced, and often overlooked, Kibera is home to hundreds of thousands of people—many of them children growing up surrounded by poverty, violence, and limited opportunities.

But in the middle of it all, something powerful is happening.

Dance Lab Academy is giving young people in Kibera a chance to rise—through the art of dance.

Specializing in high-energy, culturally rooted styles like Afro dance and ODI (Kenyan street dance), Dance Lab Academy offers free dance training to children and teens who might otherwise never step into a studio. Here, on makeshift dance floors and community spaces, movement becomes medicine.

At Dance Lab, they build confidence, community, and a sense of identity. They learn discipline, teamwork, and how to express themselves in ways words can’t capture. Some have even performed across Kenya and beyond—proof that talent lives everywhere, even in the most unlikely places.
